The Royal College of Midwives Annual Midwifery Awards are an important time for recognising the hard work of midwives across the country and to show our support of the important role midwives play, Bio-Oil sponsored the awards for the second year running.

The awards were announced at The Brewery in London by newsreader and television presenter Natasha Kaplinksy. There were strong contenders for the Bio-Oil Team Of The Year Award with North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust all shortlisted.

The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust was announced as the winning team and presented with the award by Bio-Oil Training and Congress Executive Natalia Wieclaw. The team won the award in recognition of their hard work in turning the maternity unit around from being rated the worst in the country to treating women with dignity and respect with a series of initiatives.

The team took positive steps to change how women were treated. They devised a brief questionnaire on staff attitude for women using the unit to fill in daily. This is followed up with daily rounds to deal with any problems and to give women feedback.

Steps were also taken to reinforce good practice and behaviour of staff through an internal awards programme. They also write personal letters of appreciation to the women who have used the unit and produce a quarterly magazine. A volunteer programme called “Mums for Mums” was started, training other mums to help women throughout the service and support the midwives.

Natalia Wieclaw said, “There were strong contenders in the shortlist for the Bio-Oil Team Of The Year, but we were really inspired by the drive and determination Fiona and Kanta showed in turning the reputation of the ward around. The support of one mum to another is invaluable and so the “Mums for Mums” initiative is something we strongly believe in. Congratulations again to the winning team.”

Congratulations to the team at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust and to all of the RCM award winners and shortlisted.
